Site Carpentry Apprentice, Level 3

What made you choose this apprenticeship?

I’ve always wanted a hands‑on career. When I studied maintenance operations at college, I realised carpentry was my favourite trade. That’s when I decided to look for an apprenticeship in the sector.

What has your journey been like?

I’ve learnt a lot throughout my apprenticeship. I’ve developed new skills and made good friends. I’ve gone from being an extra pair of hands to taking on tasks independently. I’m excited to see where my career goes next.

What challenges have you faced during your apprenticeship?

The biggest challenge was learning to speak up when I didn’t understand something. At first, I tried to figure things out on my own because I didn’t want to look silly, but that often caused mistakes. I’ve learnt that asking for a quick clarification can save hours of rework.

What have been some highlights of your apprenticeship?

Looking back at photos from when I started, I can see how much I’ve progressed, which feels rewarding. I’ve enjoyed working with different people and making new friends. Having a supportive training officer has also made a big difference to my experience.

What life skills is your apprenticeship teaching you?

I’ve learnt how to communicate with a diverse range of people and how to solve problems effectively. One of the most important lessons has been to double‑check and prepare before starting any task. Good preparation makes everything easier.

What are your plans once you have completed?

I plan to continue working in carpentry. In future, I’d like to go into higher education, possibly in surveying or management.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

If anyone is unsure about what to do after leaving school, I always say an apprenticeship is a great route. You learn while working and get used to being in a professional environment.
