Public Health Apprentice, Level 6

What made you choose this apprenticeship?

Throughout school and college, I was focused on becoming a footballer. I understood the importance of education but always saw it as a back-up. I was fortunate enough to do well on my BTEC extended diploma in sport which made me realise I wanted to work in health. After a few major setbacks, football didn’t work out as I’d hoped, but the skills I developed over the years helped me a lot. My interest in public health was one of the main reasons my interview went well.

What has your journey been like?

I’ve adapted a lot since I started. Advice from colleagues has helped me make the most of my day and work more independently. I’ve enjoyed the journey so far and have contributed to projects that make a real difference for people in Bristol.

What challenges have you faced during your apprenticeship?

Time management has been a challenge but I’m improving as I learn how to manage my workload. I’ve worked in settings affected by trauma and grief, which has also been challenging but I adapted quickly and used a trauma‑informed approach to provide support where needed. These experiences have strengthened my confidence and resilience.

What have been some highlights of your apprenticeship?

The highlight of my apprenticeship has been presenting sessions in secondary schools and delivering webinars to inspire future apprentices. I have enjoyed helping young people and start their journey and explore what they love.

What life skills is your apprenticeship teaching you?

My apprenticeship is teaching me a variety of life skills, including how to communicate with people at different stages of work and life. It is also helping me build independence and resilience.

What are your plans once you have completed?

I plan to move to new city to continue my education by completing a master’s degree, either through an apprenticeship or university. I also want to gain public-facing experience, supporting vulnerable groups in another country before returning to Bristol.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

I would highly recommend an apprenticeship because it has given me real life responsibilities and allowed me to learn through applying my practice into work.
