Public Health Practitioner, Level 6

What made you choose this apprenticeship?

I began my apprenticeship at Bristol City Council straight after finishing my A-levels. I enjoyed Sociology and decided that I wanted to work in an area linked to social inequalities and social sciences. The opportunity to practice what I am learning is why I chose an apprenticeship. Putting my studies into practice has helped turn my interests into a role with purpose that I enjoy.

What has your journey been like?

My apprenticeship has given me experience of many public health operations including, allocating money to services, using data and research and working with members of the public. My colleagues have helped me build my knowledge and confidence taking on responsibilities I once thought were too advanced.

What challenges have you faced during your apprenticeship?

At first, I found it difficult to balance my studies, professional development, and project work. However, over time I have developed time management and prioritisation skills, so I feel more confident setting timescales and meeting deadlines.

What have been some highlights of your apprenticeship?

A major highlight was my placement on the Health Protection Desk, where I managed outbreaks and incidences of diseases. Collaborating with so many professionals across Bristol and the wider region who work together to manage and treat notifiable diseases helped me develop in my role. Working in such a fast‑moving environment was both exciting and demanding.

What life skills is your apprenticeship teaching you?

My apprenticeship has broadened my knowledge of Public Health and has taught me skills that will be useful wherever my career takes me, including communication, collaboration, adaptability, and professionalism.

What are your plans once you have completed?

As I come to the end of my apprenticeship, I am beginning to think about my next steps. I plan to apply my skills as a registered Public Health Practitioner in a permanent role.

I have a strong interest in health protection, sport and physical activity, and community development. I am also discovering new areas of public health that I had not considered before.

At some point in my career, I would like to work aboard with an organisation such as the British Red Cross. I hope this would give me meaningful experience of the different health challenges faced around the world.

I have not yet decided the exact direction of my career in public health, which I find exciting. The skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my apprenticeship mean I can pursue a diverse range of careers that I find interesting and meaningful.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

I would strongly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who enjoys working collaboratively with others and is looking for the opportunity to apply teachings to real workplace scenarios.
