m1 metrobus south extension and active travel improvements

Archived
We asked for your views on proposals to extend the m1 metrobus south route and install active travel improvements along Hawkfield Road.

The aim of this project is to improve access to public transport by connecting new and existing housing areas that are currently under-served, providing faster journey times and improving user-experience from Imperial Park to Cribbs Causeway.

Alongside the bus route, our proposals seek to make Hawkfield Road safer for pedestrians and cyclists, improving the active travel network and further encouraging more use of active travel modes.

The key improvements include:

  • extension of the m1 metrobus route to Imperial Park
  • replacement bus-stops at Imperial Park and Hawkfield Road providing high-quality, branded bus shelters with real-time information and kerbside raised platform waiting areas
  • installing a two-way cycleway along Hawkfield Road, segregated from the footway and highway
  • upgrading pedestrian and cyclist crossings on Hawkfield Road, Briscoes Avenue, Fulford Road and Whitchurch Lane
  • speed restrictions and traffic calming measures including speed limit reductions, raised tables and speed cushions
  • vehicle access restrictions on a section of Butterfly Lane
  • parking and loading restrictions along Hawkfield Road

Feedback

The public engagement provided feedback on the initial designs which helped inform the final designs.

Following the feedback and further road safety audits and quality assurance processes,  some key changes have been made that will see road safety strengthened and the designs enhanced:

  • the end of the segregated cycleway will be moved away from the existing toucan crossing on Hawkfield Road, located between Hengrove Way Roundabout and Whitchurch Lane
  • the bus stop by-passes along the westside of Hawkfield Road will include railings
  • the majority of respondents (80%) agreed with a pedestrian crossing on Hawkfield Road and we are enhancing the designs further to include zebra crossings on all side road junctions
  • an additional pedestrian crossing on Hawkfield Road to provide more convenient access to the footpath connecting with Petherton Road
  • planting wildflowers on the embankment between Hengrove roundabout and Whitchurch Lane
  • ‘No Loading’ at peak times (Monday to Friday, 0700 – 0930 and 1600 – 1830) along the west of Hawkfield Road, between Whitchurch Lane and Fulford Road
  • installing a formal WESTscoot/WESTbike parking bay adjacent to the cycleway and footpath near Whitchurch Lane
  • installing Sheffield cycle stands at the Fulford Road northbound bus stop
  • installing a timber kerb along the segregated cycleway along Hawkfield Road (after Briscoes Avenue) to protect the trees

All other areas of the designs remain the same.
