College Green and Canons Road Junction Works Tree Felling Consultation

Archived
We consulted on the proposal to fell a tree as part of work to improve College Green’s junction with Canons Road in Bristol city centre.

This consultation was open from 15 August 2025 until 12 September 2025.

Construction work at this junction aims to improve journeys for people travelling from the centre towards College Green and Park Street.

The project includes upgrading the traffic signals for all road users, improving active travel routes, and creating more accessible crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

More information about these improvement works is available on the council’s website.

Removal of the tree

The work includes replacing the outdated three-way traffic signals and widening the pavement and cycle path between the centre and College Green. To be able to do this, we need to shorten the central reservation on St Augustine’s Parade, where a tree is located (pictured below).

5 sections on Passage Road where trees have to be removed

We will plant three new trees near College Green’s junction with Anchor Road as part of the project.

Our commitment to trees

As a council, we are committed to increasing the number of trees in Bristol with 100,000 trees planted since 2015 as part of the One Tree Per Child and Trees for Streets programmes.

Consultation results and decision

This consultation was open from from 15 August until 12 September 2025 via an online survey. Respondents could also respond to the tree felling notice via post.

Consultation Outcome

Following consideration of all the comments, the outcome is that the tree will be removed.

Reason for removal

Bristol City Council will be removing one Small-Leaved Lime Tree and replacing it with three new trees in new planters around the Canon’s Road junction as part of wider works to refurbish and upgrade the junction.

The tree was planted in 2017 and now needs to be removed to accommodate a wider footway and cycle way between the City Centre and College Green.

Translocation of the tree to an alternative location was explored during the works, but it was not feasible due to the tree’s root structure.

3 replacement trees of an appropriate species are to be planted in alternative locations around the junction in new tree pits that are being installed by the scheme.
