Improving Denmark Street area consultation 2025
Overview
Denmark Street and the surrounding area is just west of The Centre in Bristol. It is home to several cultural venues, including Bristol Hippodrome, O2 Academy and Bristol Beacon, as well as restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, offices and homes.
We asked for your views on new proposals to manage traffic and improve the public space around Denmark Street, Denmark Avenue, Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street.
The proposals would improve road safety and make the area more accessible for the large numbers of people visiting entertainment venues in the area. This would help to support Bristol’s nighttime economy.

Proposals
Bristol City Council proposed the following changes:
- Options to close part of Denmark Street to motor vehicles either full-time or part-time. We asked you about your preference in the survey
- Closing Denmark Avenue to motor vehicles full-time
- Raised crossing points at the same level as the pavement to help pedestrians cross roads at two locations:
- Denmark Street at the junction with St Augustine’s Parade (The Centre)
- Culver Street at the junction with Frogmore Street
- Tactile paving and dropped kerbs at junctions throughout the area to help people cross roads
- Speed cushions on Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street
- Improving public space with a new tree, planters, seating, cycle parking and e-scooter parking
A new zebra crossing is planned on Trenchard Street near Bristol Beacon. This would be built as part of a different project, so was not asked about in this consultation.

Funding
This project is expected to be funded by the UK government as part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
We asked
Between 22 August 2025 and 9 October 2025, we asked for views on proposals to manage traffic and improve the public space around Denmark Street, Denmark Avenue, Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street.
An online consultation survey was available to respondents. Alternative formats such as Easy Read, braille, large print, printed surveys, and translation to other languages were available on request.

A total of 688 responses were received. The consultation report summarises the results.
We did
The Transport and Connectivity Committee will decide whether to take the scheme forward. The proposals were considered on 4 December 2025. It was agreed to defer the report to the next meeting on 5 February 2026 to allow additional information to be included, such as detailed costs breakdowns and design drawings.
The committee will consider the consultation responses when making its decision. If approved, we would then send a full business case to the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority to request the funding needed to build the scheme.
If the scheme is taken forward, some of the measures, including any changes to traffic movement and car parking, will require statutory consultation on the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO). This will happen before a final decision on the proposals is made by the Executive Director Growth and Regeneration on behalf of the council’s Transport and Connectivity Committee. The responses to the TRO statutory consultation will be considered when making a final decision.
If the decision is made to build the scheme, we anticipate the project would be completed by the end of 2027.
