Bedminster Green river restoration and transport consultation

Archived
Consultation on the design proposals for Bedminster Green Regeneration.

We asked

Bristol is undergoing its greatest transformation in generations. Bedminster Green is an opportunity to create a thriving new urban community, with new homes, better transport connections and enhanced public spaces. It’s part of plans to future-proof the city for a growing population and climate change. It covers 5 areas of land to be developed (development plots) along both sides of Dalby Avenue and Malago Road in Bedminster.

Following an initial public engagement in February 2020 to get feedback on possible changes to the river and travel within the Bedminster Green area, we asked for people's views on the updated design proposals, which included transport improvements and river restoration works.

Travel and transport

Transport improvements provide a significant opportunity to support active and sustainable travel by making it easier for people to walk, cycle or take public transport within and through the area. This in turn will help meet the council’s climate aspirations by improving air quality in the area.

The transport improvements offer the opportunity to significantly improve the public realm and feel of the Malago Road and Dalby Avenue. Where possible, grass verges, planting and new trees will be introduced which will make journeys in and through the area more pleasant.

As part of these works the council would also seek to expand the District Heat Network. The District Heat Network plays a vital role in the City’s efforts to de-carbonise and address the Climate Emergency.

River restoration

The restoration of the River Malago is an opportunity to work with the community, developers and the Environment Agency to create a more natural and better river environment, benefiting local residents and businesses, and those that visit the Bedminster area.

The River Malago flows through three of the five development plots, including Plot 5 where it flows under Hereford Street and the existing green public space by Whitehouse Lane, before emerging above ground alongside Clarke Street.

The proposals aim to provide better green space for people and wildlife by bringing the river back above ground within the Green, and providing an amphitheatre seating area. Ground levels will be reduced to provide a natural flood storage area during times of high river flows, reducing the flood risk to properties within the area.

Development Plots

We didn't ask for feedback on the individual development proposals on the five Bedminster Green development plots, as these were brought forward and consulted on by the developers, through the planning process.
