Parents have a right to home educate their child. When and how to tell us about a child that is being home educated
When you must tell us about elective home education
Schools have a legal responsibility to tell us, without delay, that a compulsory school age pupil is being removed from their roll to be home educated.
Schools must not back date the removal from roll.
Electively home educated children are children of compulsory school age who:
-
the parent has decided to educate their child at home instead of sending them to school
-
aren't on a school roll
-
the parent is legally responsible for the provision of the child's education from planning, delivering, arranging, financing and reviewing the education
Elective Home Education doesn't apply to children who are registered at a school but are being provided with an education other than at school.
Tell us about an elective home education notification
Fill in the online notification form so that school staff can share relevant information with the Education Welfare Service. You'll need to upload a copy of the parent or carer's written request to remove their child from roll and the reason for home education .
Use this form when:
- the parent has told the school that they are assuming all responsibility for the child's learning
- the parent has contacted your school to request that the child is taken off roll
or
- you have reason to believe that the child is now being electively home educated by their parent
- the child has not started at your school and your reasonable enquiries show that they are being home educated
