What the Education Welfare Service does, how to make a pupil tracking referral, and tell us about an addition to or deletion from your school's roll.

What the Education Welfare Service does

The Education Welfare Service (EWS):

  • gives high quality professional support to make sure that parents and carers fulfil their statutory obligation to send their child to school regularly
  • tracks pupils who go missing from school
  • makes sure that young people who have part-time jobs or perform in entertainment are safe and protected from harm

School attendance

All children should go to school every day unless there's an unavoidable reason like illness.

Pupils should never miss school for reasons like shopping, birthdays or to wait in for a repair person or a delivery.

Parents and carers commit an offence if a child doesn't attend school regularly and the school hasn't agreed the absence.
