Find out what a listed building is and how to check if a property is listed.
A building is listed when it's of special architectural or historic interest and thought to be of national importance and worth protecting.
Buildings get listed by the Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport after recommendation by Historic England. We don't have the power to add or remove buildings from the list.
If you are proposing to carry out works to a listed building we strongly recommend that you consult the Conservation Advisory Panel (CAP) at the pre-application stage.
CAP consists of representatives from national heritage organisations and local amenity groups. The Panel provides independent advice and guidance on any project that has a significant impact to the city's heritage assets.
For further information and contact details see the Conservation Advisory Panel page.
