What a public health funeral is, why we arrange them, and how you might be able to get support for funeral costs.

In some circumstances, we must take responsibility for arranging funerals.

These circumstances include where no suitable funeral arrangements have been made, or are being made for the deceased.

We’ll arrange a public health funeral through a contract it has with a local funeral director.

This is a dignified but simple funeral. All family and friends can attend the funeral if they wish to do so.

Unless specific instructions from the deceased have been found or religious beliefs indicate burial , it will be a cremation at South Bristol Crematorium.

Support for funeral costs

If you're:

  • the relative of the person who has died
  • cannot afford to pay for a funeral
  • are in receipt of certain welfare benefits

It's possible that you will qualify for financial help to cover the cost.

For more information on this, you go to Funeral Expenses Payment (GOV.UK).

If it’s established that you’re not eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment, contact:

  • Bristol City Council Bereavement Service Team: 0117 903 8330
