Repair works to the South Bristol Cemetery Muslim burial area
We are doing repair works to the Muslim burial site area (also known as cemetery area ‘AJ') at South Bristol Cemetery.
The ground currently has subsidence and unevenness which has caused memorial stones to become unstable. These issues have affected safety as well as the peace and comfort of families who visit to remember their loved ones. The repairs will also help cemetery staff to maintain the grass in line with other lawned areas around the cemetery.
Summary of works
The repair work is due to start in early summer 2024 and should take 2 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Members of the public will have restricted access to the site area (also known as cemetery area ‘AJ') during this time while contractors carry out the repairs.
We'll bring the burial area up to a higher standard by:
- repairing the affected graves and creating a burial mound for each plot, unless families have asked not to
- filling in all uneven areas
- creating a new lawned surface
We have carefully recorded the original position of each memorial stone, and they'll be placed back into position once work is done.
We've worked closely with the Muslim Burial Group to make sure families were kept informed, could voice their concerns and ask questions or get more details.
