Repair works to the South Bristol Cemetery Muslim burial area

Repair work to the Muslim burial site area (also known as cemetery area ‘AJ') at South Bristol Cemetery has now been completed. This has brought it up to a higher standard in keeping with the rest of the cemetery.

Summary of works

Before the repairs, the ground suffered from subsidence and unevenness resulting in memorial stones becoming unstable. This affected the safety of the site, as well as the peace and comfort for families visiting and remembering their loved ones.

Following the work, the sunken areas have been filled in and the memorial stones have been levelled, with some extra supports added below the official memorials in the upper section. The drainage system has been improved but further work is expected on this.

All memorial stones have been carefully put back into position and after consultation with families, soil burial mounds have now been added to most graves, along with concrete marker stones for any graves without an official memorial.

While the new grass is growing and the ground is still wet, we have delayed the return of many smaller memorials to each grave. All are stored safely on site, but individual items can be put back on request.
Throughout the works we consulted with the Muslim Burial Group to make sure affected families were kept informed.

Cemetary rules

Cemetery rules have been put in place to ensure the burial area remains well maintained, safe and accessible for everyone.

Rules

  • access to each grave is along the foot of each row
  • you must put permanent memorials at the head end of the grave
    • restrictions will apply on size
    • you must get the design of the memorial agreed by us before it is installed
  •  trees, bushes, fences or any other ground covering are not to be added to graves or they will be removed by cemetery staff
    • during the first year after burial, as the soil settles, additional memorial gifts will be permitted

These memorial rules form part of the right of burial agreement for the grave plot and a copy of this agreement is available from the Cemetery Office.
