Temporary location for the Oasis Academy Daventry Road, plans to build a youth centre, funding for a multi-use games area and high street improvement.
Oasis Academy Daventry Road
Because of high demand for secondary school places in Bristol, we're looking at how we can temporarily open the new Oasis Academy Daventry Road. This will be on the existing site of Oasis Academy John Williams in Hengrove, from September 2023.
The school's permanent, purpose-built school on Daventry Road in Knowle West is expected to be completed in September 2024. Work is in progress to prepare the site for construction.
The permanent school will provide 900 places for young people aged 11 to 16 in South Bristol.
South Bristol youth zone
A public consultation was held from November 2021 to January 2022 to ask residents their views on plans for an £8.4m youth centre (youth zone). It would be located on undeveloped land, close to the roundabout that connects Hengrove Way and Hartcliffe Way.
The national charity OnSide will build the youth zone for children and young people aged:
- 8 to 19, or
- up to 25 for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
There are currently 14 youth zones across the UK which are:
- open 7 days a week
- offering 20 different activities
Facilities in the Bristol youth zone will include:
- a four-court sports hall
- outdoor pitch
- gym
- boxing
- martial arts room
- music room with built-in recording studio
- arts and crafts area
- teaching kitchen
- climbing wall
- dance studio
- careers advice
- mental health support
Bristol City Council cabinet members committed their support to the development of a Youth Zone in the south of the city on 24 January 2023.
New facilities and improvements
We have funding up to £300,000 to:
- build and maintain a new multi-use games area (MUGA) for sports, such as football, basketball or tennis within Filwood
- install floodlights at the football pitches on Filwood Playing Fields
Filwood Broadway high street improvements
We have funding to improve Filwood Broadway high street. How this funding will be used to improve Filwood Broadway high street was proposed in 2012 through the public realm framework. This will involve a redesign of the public space and include changes to:
- the street
- public spaces
- the play area
We've worked with locally led Filwood Broadway Working Group and the wider community to agree what changes should be made to the high street. Engagement workshops, led by the charity Create Streets, took place throughout 2022. They have led to an pdf agreed design for the high street (4.07 MB) .
Improvements to the high street and public spaces should start in 2023.
Filwood Broadway recovery from coronavirus (COVID-19)
Filwood Broadway is one of the shopping areas that will benefit from £4.725 million funding to help the city centre and high streets recover from the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Organisations with experience of working with the community and other stakeholders have submitted expressions of interest to co-design and organise cultural events and activities in Filwood Broadway until August 2023.
Filwood Broadway Levelling Up Fund
We have secured major funding from the government following a bid to the national Levelling Up Fund.
The £14.5 million we've secured will go a long way towards:
- bringing new homes to the area whilst introducing a better quality public realm (£2.1 million)
- investment in community centre (£7.6 million)
- creating space for improvements to local library services (£3 million)
- new business and commercial space, new sporting facilities, and delivering a greener and more attractive environment
The benefit to cost ratio of our successful Levelling Up bid will mean a positive impact worth more than £45 million for this part of south Bristol in local employment, social value, health benefits, and cultural amenity.
