Why our staff chose a career in social work

What the ASYE looks like, and why you should choose ours

Over the past 2 years, we've crafted an outstanding programme to support our newly qualified social workers (NQSWs) in their Assessed and Supported Year of Employment (ASYE). This includes a dedicated ASYE Lead to coordinate the programme and an ASYE assessor to oversee your first year in practice, both readily available to support your development.

The programme offers regular workshops led by experienced practitioners, covering practical topics like well-being, workload management, specific practice issues, and more. These sessions provide opportunities to connect with fellow NQSWs, fostering a strong peer network from day one.

You'll also have full access to the comprehensive ASYE training plan on offer in Bristol. It includes the practice models used in Bristol, as well as assessment skills, court work, and other invaluable skills to set you up for a strong start in your social work career.

We understand the importance of continuous learning and growth tailored to your individual needs. Beyond the structured ASYE programme, there are numerous other opportunities for you to access a wider range of training specific to your role, interests, or learning needs. We encourage you at every step to explore these diverse training options to enhance your professional development further.

Your first 12 months as an ASYE

Month 1

Beginning your ASYE: once registered as a qualified social worker with Social Work England you can begin your ASYE. You'll be invited to our ASYE welcome event.

Through the year your workload will develop from a lower base, and you'll begin the year with increased levels of supervision. You'll be invited to access learning opportunities and supportive reflective groups.

Every 3 months

You'll attend review meetings with your ASYE assessor and the ASYE lead to celebrate your successes, consider next steps, and identify any support you might need.

Month 12

Upon successful completion of your ASYE portfolio, you'll be in invited to our celebration event! You'll also be given access to our post-ASYE support package.

Social work can be a tough and challenging role at times, but it's a profession to be proud of, and you have the power to make a difference to children and families in ways that no other profession can. So, to further develop your skills during your ASYE, NQSWs have access to various training opportunities, workshops, and additional reflective supervision.

You'll also be provided with a reduced caseload, increased levels of supervision and a minimum of one day of protected time each month for portfolio writing and professional development activities.

"ASYE programme has really shown that the cohort's well-being is just as important as our progression through the programme."
